Taking out loans to pay for food
Following on yesterday’s blog post on living wages and food (link), this image was in today’s Mail and Guardian’s Business section.
The largest category of the actual use of personal loans is food. Look at the change from 2010 to 2011. This clearly reflects rising food prices, and we haven’t yet seen the impact of the current US drought fully filtering through to local food prices.
The current food system and wage structure is simply not working for the poor. How many more wake up calls do we need?
